Free Winter Driving Clinic
Outdoor Adventure Center
5:00 pm-6:00 pm. Cost: Free
Sign-Up Deadline: 3 November. Winter is a beautiful time of the year, especially when a fresh layer of new snow covers everything. Winter can also be a very dangerous time of the year and cold weather poses multiple new driving hazards. If you plan on traveling during the winter, it pays to be prepared for the unexpected. The OAC course includes; pre-trip safety inspection, driving tips and chain installation. 634-2054

Monterey Bay Whale Watching***
Outdoor Adventure Center
7:00 am–11:00 pm. Cost: $55 Adult, $42 Youth (5-12)
Sign-up Deadline: 5 November. This popular trip aboard a chartered boat in the Monterey Bay will take you out to sea where you will have the opportunity to view Humpback Whales, Blue Whales and Dolphins as they migrate to central California waters each year. Monterey Bay is a prime feeding location for these whales and the best place in the nation to observe a variety of marine mammals and seabirds. On average, 3-7 species of whales/dolphins are sighted per trip. Your trip will be led by marine biologists who fully narrate and answer questions on each trip. The boat will depart the Wharf at 2:00 pm. You will have time to spend on the Monterey Municipal Wharf both before, and after the trip so that you can shop or enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants. Bring snacks and/or a packed lunch if you prefer and plenty of beverages for the day. With the high gas prices this trip is a bargain! Price includes ticket and transportation. 634-2054

Sign-Up Deadline: 12 November. Come explore breathtaking redwood forests and the beautiful Sonoma coastline. On our first stop we will explore the trails of the majestic Armstrong Redwood Reserve that includes a 300 ft Coastal Redwood and the Colonel Armstrong Tree that is over 1400 years old. We will then head for the scenic fishing port town of Bodega Bay. Some of our stops along this beautiful coastline include the famous Goat Rock, Duncan’s Landing and Arch Rock. We will briefly stop for dinner on the way home. This trip will go, rain or shine! Please bring raingear, plenty of snacks, a lunch and beverages for the day—and don’t forget your camera! 634-2054

Northern Valley Wine & Historic Murphys Tour

The quaint historic town of Murphys is located in the Northern Valley of Calaveras County and is renowned for producing some of the finest premium grapes and award-winning wines in the world. You will tour the beautiful grounds of Ironstone Vineyards and be treated to complimentary wine tasting and given time to visit the museum which is home to the largest Crystalline Gold Leaf specimen in the world, weighing forty-four pounds! You will then be dropped off in historic downtown Murphys where you can visit any of the numerous wineries and wine taste until your heart’s content. You may also choose to stop by one of the many award-winning restaurants or sidewalk cafes. Brave the public transportation and venture deeper into the city or ride the famous cable cars to a one of a kind specialty shop. Sign-up deadline: 25 November. Get on board the OAC ski shuttle as we take you to Squaw Valley ski resort. Active duty personnel with a valid ID ski for free, kids 12 and under are only five dollars, or you can purchase your discounted lift tickets at the OAC. Sit back and relax after a long day of skiing or boarding--you can even take a power nap on the way home. Even if you’re not a skier, Squaw Valley offers a day full of opportunities. Visit the Villages great selection of shops and restaurants, ice skate, ride the gondola or checkout the Olympic History Museum. Victorian Christmas in Nevada City

Sign-up Deadline: 1 December. Historic downtown Nevada City is the perfect setting for this Holiday event. The streets are closed off to traffic, and the town is thrown back into time. Costumed store merchants, musical entertainers and street vendors fill the town, while the smell of roasting chestnuts, hot cider and mulled wine fill the air. Enjoy any of the scrumptious restaurants, cafes or historic bars and pubs in downtown Nevada City. Don’t be surprised if Father Christmas or a Christmas elf strolls by. Let the OAC ski shuttle transport you to Northstar-at-Tahoe ski resort where more than $15 million in on-mountain and village improvements have taken place for the 2008-09 season. A few of the improvements include extension of ski trails and the express quad lift on Lookout Mountain, new snowmaking systems, improved trails, increased lift capacity, and widening of the ski boundaries, increasing the resort's total skiable acreage to a total of 2,904 acres! Northstar offers free lift tickets to active duty members with a valid ID, and for everyone else, you can purchase a discounted lift ticket at the OAC. Sit back and relax after a long day on the hill and let OAC do the driving. Northstar also offers an ice skating facility located in the heart of the Village, surrounded by a collection of upscale shops and restaurants, fire pits and seating areas--perfect for sipping hot chocolate and trading ski stories.

Sign-up deadline: 10 December. Snowshoeing under a full moon is a majestic outdoor activity that everyone can enjoy. Pack yourself a healthy dinner and bring along your sense of adventure for a night of snowshoeing. This fast growing sport is great for those who love aerobic fitness and are looking for a new outlet to expend some energy. Learn how to get out and enjoy this low key, high energy, and low cost sport. The evening will include a beginner instruction, snowshoes, poles and roundtrip transportation. Youth through adult snowshoes sizes are available. You will need a good pair of hiking boots or waterproof style boots to properly fit your snowshoes. 634-2054

Get in on this great opportunity to ski or board Alpine Meadows, offering some of the BEST “bowls” in the Sierra! The resort offers three separate ski and snowboard Terrain Parks. The Kids’ Tiegel Terrain Park is popular with beginners and kids. Intermediates reach for the next level in the Kangaroo Ridge Park; and advanced skiers and riders make a beeline to the Shreadows Terrain Park. Grass Valley’s downtown area is blocked off to motorized traffic and is transformed into a turn-of-the-century setting. Spend the evening enjoying the sights and sounds of holiday music, wine tasting, shopping, ridding in a horse drawn wagon, musicians, Santa Clause and more! All shops, restaurants and numerous downtown wineries will be open to celebrate this fun annual event. Get your kids out of the house to release some of that pent up holiday energy and swing by the Outdoor Adventure Center as it is transformed into Kiddie Land for a few fun filled hours! OAC will set up some of their new bounce houses, spider web wall and slide (weather permitting) for the kid’s enjoyment. Bring a sack lunch or purchase lunch at the event.
